Photojournalism

"A picture is worth a thousand words" is a saying almost everyone has heard at least once. I used to just brush it off. It wasn't until I decided to cover an event I was volunteering for, the Bay Area Science Festival (BASF), that I realized how true that adage is. With most of my past articles, I'd spend hours and hours writing thousands upon thousands of words just to describe one simple part of the process or event, but the coverage I did on BASF was one of the quickest, shortest, and simplest I've ever done. I found myself not needing to write as much because the pictures already told so much. Just looking at them made me want to go all over again. Since then, I've fallen in love with my camera, and it's become an internal battle for me to decide if I'll write or lean on photos for my next beat.
